GAM Teachers

Rebekah Allan violin

Jo Chew-Sanders violin

My name is Jo-ling but most people call me Jo. I have taught for 8 years within a range of schools and started at GAM in 2016. When I was 4 years old, my mum made me my first violin from a cardboard egg box. I then progressed onto a real violin and never stopped playing. My favourite city in the world is Bath - here I studied music at Bath Spa University. I initially learnt to play violin through the Suzuki method so my teaching is definitely influenced by this. I love playing at weddings and am always on standby to play at any weddings that happen within my church. Teaching the violin is the absolute dream job for me as I love working with all ages.

Polly Davis recorder/flute

Matt Denton chamber music

Wes Duggan clarinet/saxophone

Dave Fishpool piano/brass

I became a music teacher in 1975 and during my time working in secondary education I became Head of Music for 13 years in a Comprehensive School. During my musical life I’ve been active as a member of various choral societies and chamber choirs. For a time, I conducted numerous musicals and light operas and have played trombone in brass bands, brass ensembles and various orchestras. As for my time with Gloucestershire Academy of Music I was associated with the Beauchamp Music Group; which eventually morphed into the Gloucestershire Academy of Music. From its early beginnings I occasionally stepped in to take wind band rehearsals and in 1985 my wife and I were regular Welfare Staff on the Summer Intermediate Orchestra courses for many years. In January 2004 I took over the conductorship of Sinfonia at Beauchamp House and I’m happy to say that I still take the rehearsals. It was in September 2008 that I began instrumental teaching at Gloucestershire Academy of Music and since then I’ve successfully prepared numerous students for ABRSM exams on piano and brass instruments.

Caroline Lumsden violin

Caroline Lumsden (nee Hewitt-Jones) trained as a violinist at the Guildhall School of Music and then as a primary teacher where she studied the importance of pitch, rhythm and movement training in the early years. Whilst bringing up 4 children, she founded Beauchamp Music Group in 1981 and then a new institution, the Gloucester Academy in 1991 for the more advanced students. These two institutions were later amalgamated under the excellent baton of Glyn Oxley. During 21 happy years teaching at Beauchamp House, Caroline lectured for the European String Teachers’ Association on her Musicland Approach and founded Junior ESTA to link pupils and teachers around Europe. Courses and exchanges were held annually at Beauchamp House as well as around Europe and further afield to Australia and Hong Kong. In 2005, the success of Caroline’s teaching methods, led her to teach firstly at Junior Guildhall and then to Trinity College of Music to start a new programme, for 3-13 year with integrated teacher training. Many of her ex pupils are performers and teachers themselves and running their own centres including Musicland Oxford which uses the GAM syllabus. With many publications, published by Fabers, Edition Peters and Musicland, Caroline now divides her time between consulting, teaching and writing for both Early years and String Teaching as well as finding time for her husband Alan and 9 grandchildren. Constantly improving her curriculum for string players, Caroline is delighted to be back in Gloucester and Cheltenham, helping nurture a new generation of string players.

Jessi Pywell is a professional conductor, choral animateur and music educator who enjoys working with people of all ages. Jessi has studied folk, jazz, rock and classical music through her life on a collection of instruments. Through this rich musical tapestry Jessi discovered a real passion for choral music and music education, which lead onto a postgraduate course in conducting at the University of Cambridge. Jessi thrives on her work conducting her choirs, running workshops and improving music education provision across the UK.

Kate Skeet spent her teenage years training very hard to be a classical violist and her early adult life working in various musical settings as a performer, administrator, teacher and violin seller. Eventually she decided to concentrate on spreading her love of music and its magical powers to everyone she could find. So now, she puts on baby-friendly classical concerts in Cheltenham, teaches strings in a local school and at home, performs as a baroque viola player, and, after joining the Gloucestershire Gamelan Group a few years ago, is delighted to be on the team of gamelan tutors for GAM.
